The Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LUHS) was founded in 2011, as a result of the merger between the well-known Kaunas University of Medicine and the Lithuanian Veterinary Academy. The University’s roots in the medical field date back to the 1920s. It is now the largest institution providing university degrees, training and research in biomedical sciences in Lithuania. LUHS is funded, accredited and recognised by the Republic of Lithuania.The degree programmes offered by the Faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing and Veterinary Medicine meet all EU directives (93/16/EEC, 75/364/EEC, 2005/36/EC, 2001/19/EC, 1999/46/EC, 98/63/EC, 98/21/EC, 97/50/EC, 89/594/EEC, 81/1057/EEC, 78/688/EEC, 78/687/EEC, 78/686/EEC, 85/435/EEC, 85/434/EEC, 85/433/EEC, 85/432/EEC, 77/453/EEC, 77/452/EEC, 78/1026/EEC, 78/1027/EEC) regulating higher education in Medicine in the EU.The degree programmes offered by the Faculty of Public Health are authorised by ASPHER (the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region). Accreditation of higher education programmes began in 2001, established by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Lithuania. Degree programmes are assessed and certified by the Centre for Quality Assessment in Higher Education. The certified degree programmes are accredited by the Ministry of Education and Science.All the degree programmes offered by the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences are accredited by the Ministry of Education and Science as a result of the assessment carried out by international experts.

Faculty of Medicine:

  • The degree programme has been awarded full accreditation status. Successfully adjusted to the Bologna Process.

Faculty of Dentistry:

  • The degree programme has been awarded full accreditation status. Successfully adjusted to the Bologna Process.

Faculty of Pharmacy:

  • The degree programme has been awarded full accreditation status. Successfully adjusted to the Bologna Process.

Faculty of Public Health:

  • The undergraduate degree programme in Public Health was awarded full accreditation status in 2006;
  • The master’s degree programme in Public Health was awarded full accreditation status in 2006;
  • The master’s degree programme in Public Health Management was awarded full accreditation status in 2004;

Faculty of Nursing:

  • The degree programme was awarded full accreditation status in 2010;

Faculty of Veterinary Medicine:

  • The undergraduate degree programme in Veterinary Medicine was awarded full accreditation status in 2003. The degree programme was also assessed by EAEVE (European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education);
  • The undergraduate degree programme in Veterinary Medicine and Food Safety was awarded full accreditation status in 2010;
  • The master’s degree programme in Veterinary Medicine and Food Safety was awarded full accreditation status in 2008;

 

LUHS is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools published by the WHO (World Health Organization). The University works in cooperation with the WHO. LUHS is also listed in the International Medical Education Directory (IMED) and in the American database FAIMER (Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research).

The University’s Veterinary Academy is a member of the World Veterinary Association.

 

The University of Kaunas works in close cooperation with several Spanish Universities such as Santiago de Compostela, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Universidad de Oviedo and Universidad de Lérida. Many international medical students stay for a whole academic year at Kaunas University.
