Pleven Medical University is regulated by state laws on education and has its own governing bodies. It is an accredited, specialist university that offers high quality education in the fields of medicine and healthcare. Over the years, a large number of students from over 45 different countries have graduated from the university. Pleven was the first Bulgarian university to introduce programmes in English and an impressive 96% of its international graduates have passed the specific examinations held in their home countries. The 6-year medical degree programme in English has been designed to be taught in small groups of 6 students, providing them with the best practical experience a higher education institution can offer.
Optional subjects include: Disaster Medicine, Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, Emergency Medicine (hospital internships), IT and Medical Statistics and Sports Medicine. Students can also attend lectures and seminars at the New Telecommunication Endoscopic Training Centre for Robotic Surgery at Pleven Medical University.
The university also offers student exchange programmes such as the ERASMUS Programme, the LEONARDO DA VINCI Programme and the IFMSA Programme (International Federation of Medical Students Associations). The 9th International Conference on Medical Sciences for students and young doctors was held in October 2011, as part of the annual conferences organised by the university.
The university is conveniently located near the University Hospital (where students do their clinical practice), the Halls of Residence, the university’s sports facilities and the city centre. Pleven is the largest economic, cultural, social and transport centre in northern Bulgaria, and the cost of living is significantly lower than in the capital Sofia.
